Your Ultimate Guide to Fighting Dry Skin this Winter

Updated: Jan 13, 2023

As a skincare professional, especially in an area with cold winters, I always get questions about dry skin and how to combat and treat this condition. This is one of the reasons I began creating my skincare products. In 2017 I began experiencing dry patches and the everyday lotions were not addressing my issues. The weather is a contributing factor to how your skin changes over the seasons. Moisture levels are low and trans-epidermal water loss or TEWL occurs. After reading this guide you will be ready to combat that relentless dry skin that comes with the winter weather!

The Why: Why Does Dry Skin Occur in The Winter?

Trans-epidermal Water Loss plays a large role in how dry your skin gets in the colder months. Trans- epidermal water loss or TEWL is when the water in your skin evaporates into the air. The less humid the air, the more likely you are to experience TEWL. We know all the good skin care folks are using products like Hyaluronic Acid, which attracts moisture from the air into your skin, however in the cold months if there is no moisture in the air it may actually have adverse effects and further your skins dryness.

What Can You Do to Improve Moisture- Retention?

Thankfully you can start protecting your skin by incorporating a few moisture -retention tips. Chronically dry skin can cause tears and fissures in the skin and can lead to premature aging.

Water is an ingredient that is integral to your skincare routine. During the drier months, instead of patting my face dry after cleansing, leaving the skin slightly damp before applying the rest of your products can make a huge difference. Another way you can incorporate water is my steaming your skin while doing your routine. this allows for the pores to open and softens the rough dry skin allowing it to be better able to receive moisture from the rest of your products.

Moisturize! When you are suffering with drier skin, even if you aren't normally dry, now is the time to use that cream moisturizer. That ticker consistency is needed because you will find in the winter your face gets drier faster than normal. Sebum production also slows down so you may not suffer from that oily T-zone, so it's okay to use a heavier moisturizer to counteract the harsh conditions.

Seal It In! This is my favorite part of winterizing my skin care. This tip is most useful at night, but it can work during the day depending on the severity of your dryness. Use a petroleum-based product to seal in the moisture you just put into your skin (natural butters work as well). Typically, these types of ingredients repel water, but it will act as a barrier to keep the water from evaporating out of your skin and help you retain the moisture you just added.
