Traits of a Good Esthetician

Updated: Jan 13, 2023

When entering into a spa or salon suite for the first time as a client there are certain indicators you should look for in a good esthetician's space. As a new client to an esthetician, you want to know that this person can be trusted with your skin health, insecurities and needs. Here are some characteristics you should look for in your skin care professional so that you get the best out of your experience.

  1. Clear Communication- As a beauty professional, keeping the lines of communication open with your clientele needs to be a priority. Clients should be able to ask questions about the service without feeling like a nuisance to the esthetician. Clients are not the subject matter experts, so any opportunity to educate them on a procedure should be met with grace and not hostility.

  2. A Tidy Treatment Room- The space in which services are provided should always be neat and tidy. A clean organized space allows for services to have a flow and creates a calm environment for the client and the service provider.

  3. Sanitary Space- Not only should the space be tidy and organized, but it should be sanitary as well. Ensure that your professional is not just saying they are clean, but their actions follow suit. When receiving services like waxing, your esthetician should never double dip into the wax pot. Or if you are receiving a facial with extractions, be sure they are using clean sterile implements on you. Don't be afraid to ask questions of your service provider, you have the right to know what is happening to your body.

  4. Comfortability - In many instances our bodies tell us when something feels right and when something feels wrong or uncomfortable. If at any point your esthetician is not seeking to make you feel comfortable, end your service. In human services, there is a good (money) being exchanged for a service (waxing, facial etc.). Your level of comfort should be important and prioritized when entering into a space that can many times be intimidating because of the type of service. Ensure that you and your service provider take your comfort into consideration.

In conclusion, all four of these factors can help a client decide if their esthetician is right for them. In a day and age where stylists are lacking on the side of customer service. You as the client have every right to leverage your business someplace that truly values you and your safety.
